A unique and moving exhibit will open Friday at the Roswell Visual Arts Center. “America,” an exhibition of paintings and drawings by impoverished Filipino children, displays the impressions children from rural areas of the Philippines have of the United States.
Toni Luetgers is the Founder and Executive Director of the Galing Foundation, which means “great” in Filipino. The Roswell-based organization works to provide gently-used books and schools supplies to public libraries and teachers in Ms. Luetgers’ native Philippines.
Through the organization she has received artwork from the children, which she said is very symbolic of America’s reputation around the world.
“Over 100 pieces were submitted based on their perception of America,” she said. “Everything from Disney characters, famous landmarks and the new president and his Inauguration.”
The art exhibit will benefit the Galing Foundation in its mission to spread awareness and eradicated poverty and illiteracy. The opening reception for “America” will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and the exhibit will run through Aug. 7 at the Roswell Visual Arts Center, 10495 Woodstock Rd, Bldg. D.
