In the South, Friday night means football. Stadiums at all high schools across Georgia will fill with fans and supporters cheering on their teams.

To build anticipation for the opening game Aug. 27 in the Eagle’s Nest, the Milton High School Touchdown Club and the city of Milton are partnering to put on Community Kickoff 2010, Aug. 1 from 1to 6 p.m.

“We want people to have some food, have some fun and see the football team,” said event chair Monique Lake.

There will be games, rides and activities such as a 24-foot rock climbing wall, bungees, inflatable obstacle courses, tug-of-war and punt, pass and kick contest. Additionally, food will be for from several local eateries, including Zaxby’s, Pizza Vito, Jimmy John’s and Dickey’s BBQ.

The free, family-friendly event was conceived by the Touchdown Club to enhance the team’s annual picture day, said Jason Wright, the city’s spokesperson.

“They wanted to make it a branded event that more than just the football team could enjoy,” Wright said.

“This seemed like a great opportunity for the city. If it is well received, it could grow into a much larger annual event,” Cyndee Bonacci, Milton’s parks and recreation director, said in a press release. Lake said organizers are hoping the Community Kickoff will grow into a Taste of Milton-type event.

All members of the public are welcome, regardless of affiliation with the team. Wright said the 900 families involved in the Alpharetta Youth Football Association have also been invited to take part.

On the Saturday prior to Community Kickoff 2010, there is a Milton Eagles fundraising dinner gala and auction at White Columns and a golf tournament the following Monday.
