House Speaker Pro Tem and District 46 state Rep. Jan Jones, R-Milton, has added new language to the resolution to recreate Milton County.

The new language states “the newly created county would also assume an equitable share of the debts and liabilities of the existing county.”

According to Fulton County Commissioner Lynne Riley, the new language makes it clear that Milton County will be obligated to pay some of Fulton County’s outstanding debt if the county is recreated.

“No harm is intended,” she said.

Last Thursday, an educational information session on Milton County was held, chaired by District 38 State Senator Horacena Tate.

Comments from the floor were made by mayors Jere Wood, Mike Bodker and Joe Lockwood. Ms. Riley also made a statement at the session.

According to Ms. Riley, the session was scheduled for the purpose of hearing a presentation from a Fulton County lobbying team, which spoke in opposition of Milton County.

“They were not receptive of new information, and we had to gain permission to present our side,” she said. “I was disappointed that we were not invited from the beginning.”

After the session, former Alpharetta city councilman and member of the Milton County Legislative Advisory Committee Jim Paine sent out an e-mail to supporters listing reasons why the recreation of Milton County is beneficial.

Though most of the Georgia General Assembly’s recent activity has revolved around the state’s budget, Ms. Jones says she still hopes to get the Milton County resolution out of committee within the next two weeks. She also said she remains hopeful that it will pass this year.

Phone calls for comment to Fulton County Commissioner John Eaves were not returned as of press time.
