The official colors to signify 2009-2010 basketball in Region 6AAAAA may as well be navy blue and red. After all, Milton High School left no doubt regarding who rules region hoops on Monday night at Campbell High School.

Both the Eagles and Lady Eagles claimed convincing victories over home-standing Campbell last night. In doing so, both Milton teams were crowned region champs and secured No. 1 seeds for the upcoming Class-AAAAA state tournament.

“What a gutsy performance by our girls. The credit goes to them,” said Lady Eagles head coach Craig Bennett, following Milton’s 49-39 victory over Campbell on Monday.

“They stepped up big. I’m proud of them.”

Milton atoned for a brutal loss in the region finals to Roswell last year by defeating the Lady Hornets in the region semis before dispatching of Campbell.

The Lady Eagles (21-5) will host North Gwinnett (19-9) in a first round state tournament game on Saturday.

Behind three tough wins over Walton, Wheeler, and Campbell, the Eagles swept to the boys first region title in 51 years.

“I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say this is probably the toughest region in the state, and probably one of the toughest regions in the whole country,” said boy’s head coach David Boyd.

“It’s a good situation for us. We have to take advantage of it,” added Boyd, regarding Milton’s home-court advantage through the first two rounds of state. The Eagles (24-4) will host Collins Hill (18-7) on Friday, looking to embark on a return trip to the state finals.

Back to the girl’s side, Roswell and Alpharetta will represent 6AAAAA as the No. 3 and No. 4 seed, respectively. The Lady Hornets (16-11) travel to Norcross (23-4) on Saturday, while Alpharetta (15-13) will play at Mill Creek (24-4) on the same day.

Chattahoochee (19-7), St. Francis (16-11), and Blessed Trinity (14-14) also qualified for the girl’s tournament, and will play first round road games on Saturday.

In the biggest surprise of the past week, the St. Francis boys went from a No. 3 subregion seed in 7A to the region runners-up. By reaching the region finals, the Knights (12-15) captured a No. 2 seed and will host Mt. Zion, Carroll (15-12) on Friday night.

The Centennial and Blessed Trinity boys will play as No. 4 seeds in the state tournament. The Knights (20-8) must travel to Norcross (25-2), while the Titans were waiting to hit the road to Dade County or Rockmart at press time.
